A Chess Piece Worth $1.2 Million
In 1831 on the Isle of Lewis was found a medieval chessboard with chess pieces made of walrus ivory with five chess pieces missing. Two thousand years later, one of those 5 pieces was added, one British family brought it into Sotheby’s in 2019.
The grandfather of that family bought a chess piece for only $6 fifty-five years ago. When the anonymous family showed with it, the staff immediately recognized it and the piece is now on display at the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. According to the BBC, it is worth $1.2 million.
